USA PATRIOT stands for "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism."
Congress passed the USA Patriot Act in 2001 to "deter and punish terrorist acts." While the stated purpose of the act was indeed noble in its own right, lawmakers were, understandably, most proud of the acronym created from its full title.
Official records of the Act's original language show that there were actually several different titles being considered by Congress.
